General Research Sources
Regardless of your topic you should start with general sources first. This is particularly important if you do not know a great deal about your essay topic.
Good general sources to start with are:
- Encyclopedias (print and online)
- General Histories of the country or period
- Biographical Dictionaries
- Very short books and introductions to your topic
Why should you start with general sources? They will give you a good overview of your topic. They will help you answer such important questions as:
- What is the sequence of events? Understanding sequence of events is important in any essay.
- Who are the key people involved in your topic?
- What are the key places and locations?
- What were the important turning points in my study?
