George Orton 1873-1958


George Orton 1873-1958 track athlete, scholar, Canada's first Olympic medal winner, born at Strathroy, Ontario; died June 26, 1958 at Meredith, New Hampshire. Orton started his competitive career while attending the University of Toronto and the University of Pennsylvania, where he got his PhD; 1892 won the Canadian and American mile championships and repeated in 1893; by 1900 he had a total of 121 wins; 1900 attended Paris Olympics with the Americans since Canada did not send a team; won the gold medal in the 2500 metre steeplechase, and bronze in the 400 metre hurdles; by 1921 he had won 15 US championships.
