Bicameral

A two-House system of government. Canada's Parliament is bicameral, meaning it has a House of Commons and a Senate.


Bill

A proposed law. To become law, a bill must pass three readings, committee study, and receive Royal Assent.


Black Rod

A ceremonial baton the Sergeant-at-Arms uses to knock on the door of the Chamber to seek admission for the Lieutenant Governor to read the Speech from the Throne or grant Royal Assent. It symbolizes the Assembly's supremacy over its own proceedings and its own space.


Budget

The government's estimated revenue and expenses for a fiscal year. Alberta's fiscal year is from April 1 to March 31.


Bylaw

A law made by a municipal government.
