A Note on Spelling - I have spelled Cartier's name "George-Etienne Cartier" throughout, primarily because the english-language Web has trouble with accents, but also because Cartier preferred to have the English call him "George" and the French "Georges-Étienne." Victorian Canadians were not too overly concerned with spelling.
