2015 is the Bicentennial of John A. Macdonald's Birth

In November, 2007, Ipsos Reid released a poll for the Dominion Institute showing a broad decline of knowledge in political history over the past ten years. For example, in 1997, 36% of Canadians knew the year of confederation compared to just 26% in 2007. Similarly, ten years ago, 54% knew the name of Canada’s first Prime Minister, while just 46% now know that John A Macdonald served in this role.

  • The John A. Macdonald Portal is an open portal dedicated primarily to the life and career of Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John Alexander Macdonald, with additional information on the life and career of Macdonald's great colleague, George-Étienne Cartier. It gives users a narrative of Macdonald's life, and his career with Cartier, as well as a growing slate of supporting textual and image resources that can be used for student projects and book reports.
