Gabrielle Roy 1909-1983

Franco-Manitoban novelist, born at St-Boniface, Manitoba, the youngest of 11 children; died in Québec City July 13, 1983. Roy was educated in St-Boniface and taught in country schools in Manitoba for several years. In 1939, she travelled to Europe to study drama in London and Paris, then married in 1947 and moved to Québec City. She is the author of Bonheur d'Occasion (1945), translated as The Tin Flute (1947), a realistic portrayal of life in a Montréal slum, that won the Prix Femina in France and the Governor-General's award; La Petite Poule d'eau (1950) translated as Where Nests the Water Hen, Alexandre Chenevert (1954) translated as The Cashier; La Montagne secrète (1961) translated as The Hidden Mountain, and La Route d'Altamont (1966) translated as The Road Past Altamont.
