  • January 20, 2026 - Military - French explorer Samuel de Champlain arrives to winter in a Huron village after being wounded in a battle with Iroquois south of Lake Ontario. Midland, Ontario
  • January 20, 2026 - Charles Le Moyne appointed baron; first nobility in New France. Paris, France
  • January 20, 2026 - Samuel Vetch appointed Governor of Nova Scotia; serves to August 17, 1717. Nova Scotia
  • January 20, 2026 - American Revolutionary War - Preliminaries of peace are signed between Great Britain and the United States. London, England
  • January 20, 2026 - War of 1812 - Battle of Frenchtown - British Maj Gen Henry Procter leads 500 regulars of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and 41st Regiment of Foot, and some Essex militia across the frozen Detroit River from Amherstburg, with sledges drawing 6 3 lb cannons; they swiftly head south toward the River Raisin and Frenchtown, joined by Tecumseh's 800 warriors from Amherstburg and Detroit.   • January 20, 2026 - Terrorism - While George Desbarats and his wife were giving a fancy-dress ball at their Ottawa residence, the Desbarats and Cameron building on Sparks Street, where D'Arcy McGee was assassinated, was set on fire and destroyed, as were the printing equipment on the premises and the finished copies, lithographic plates, and illustrations of the first edition of the Œuvres de Champlain, edited by Abbé Charles-Honoré Laverdière. Fortunately Laverdière had kept a set of proofs at Quebec. The arson was doubtless the work of the Fenians, who had warned Desbarats about printing anti-Fenian material. Ottawa, Ontario

  • January 20, 2026 - Immigration - Advance group of about 2,000 Russian Doukhobors lands in Halifax from Russia en route to the west; 5,400 follow shortly after; these first members of the mystical Christian sect (the name means spirit wrestlers,) are sponsored by Count Leo Tolstoy, the novelist and author of War and Peace.   • January 20, 2026 - King Edward VIII starts reign on the death of his father King George V; he will abdicate eleven months later, on December 11, 1936, to marry the woman I love, a divorcee, Wallis Simpson. The stamp shows him four years earlier when he was Prince of Wales, and first visited Canada. The new King has a ranch south west of Calgary. London, England

  • January 20, 2026 - Media - CBS Television production of Studio One transmitted to CBLT-TV and rebroadcast in Canada; First transmission of a TV show from the United States to Canada. Toronto, Ontario
- January 20 - Disaster - Methane gas bump leaves three dead in the McGillivray mine. Coleman, Alberta
  • January 20, 2026 - The Guinness family sells the Lions Gate Bridge to and from Stanley Park and North Vancouver to the British Columbia government for $5,959,060. The bridge was officially opened on May 29, 2026 by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth during a royal visit to Canada; construction began March 31, 2026; opens for two way traffic November 14, 2025 after one and a half years construction at a cost of $5.8 million.   • January 20, 2026 - Military - Robert Shankland dies; won the Victoria Cross at the World War I Battle of Passchendaele in 1917; one of three VC winners who lived on Winnipeg's Valour Road. Winnipeg, Manitoba
  • January 20, 2026 - Media - Radio Tuktoyaktuk starts broadcasting in English and Inuktutuk, to about 650 residents of the Mackenzie River Delta; Canada's first indigenous broadcaster. Tuktoyaktuk, NWT
