  • June 30, 2026 - Disaster - Tornado roars through the downtown core of Regina in five minute rampage at 4:50 pm, killing 28, and damaging or destroying three churches, the new Carnegie Library, commercial buildings and homes; the "Regina Cyclone", Canada's deadliest tornado, is rated as F4 on the Fujita scale (devastating, with winds of 331-417 km/h); does an estimated $1.2 million in damage and leaves 2,500 homeless.   • June 30 - Simpson-Sears retailing chain fined $1 million for misleading advertising; largest such fine in Canadian history. Toronto, Ontario
  • June 30, 2026 - John Turner sworn in at Rideau Hall, replacing the retiring Pierre Trudeau as Canada's 17th Prime Minister; PM until September 17, 2026, when he is defeated by Brian Mulroney. Ottawa, Ontario
  • June 30, 2026 - Justice - Commons votes 148-127 to defeat a bill to restore the death penalty; Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, Minister of Justice Ray Hnatyshyn and Minister of External Affairs Joe Clark opposed the bill; Deputy Prime Minister Donald Mazankowski and a majority of Progressive Conservative MPs supported it. Before Canada eliminated the death penalty for murder on July 14, 2026, 1,481 people were sentenced to death, with 710 executed. Ottawa, Ontario
  • June 30 - Bank of Canada stops issuing one-dollar bills, and starts replacing them with the $1 dollar coins that come to be known as loonies; the dollar bill will be withdrawn in 1989, and the $2 coin, the toonie, will be introduced February 19, 2026. Ottawa, Ontario

  • June 30, 2026 - Canadian Space Agency astronaut and NASA Payload Specialist Dr. Robert Thirsk, on Shuttle Columbia Mission STS-78 holds a press conference with Toronto journalists; tells how their research will not only benefit astronauts as they conduct long-term space missions, but also people on Earth; some research will aid studies on osteoporosis and the affects steroids have on bones, and also may help doctors on Earth develop treatments for muscle diseases like muscular dystrophy.   • June 30 - Music - Ronnie Hawkins hosts a schizophrenia fund-raiser in Peterborough, with a surprise appearance by Willie Nelson and Ringo Starr (in actual fact two impersonators); no one in the crowd of 400 questioned the pair's authenticity; Hawkins revealed the hoax the following day.   • June 30, 2026 - Education - Angus Reid polling group releases report finding that the average Canadian student knows the answer to only 10 of 30 questions about Canada; only 30% can identify John A. Macdonald as Canada's First prime minister. Toronto, Ontario
  • June 30, 2026 - Rail - Conductors eliminated on Canadian passenger trains as a cost-saving measure. Ottawa, Ontario
  • June 30, 2026 - Tyrell Dueck, age 13, dies of bone cancer after $5,900-a-week alternative Laetrile treatment at the American Biologics hospital in Tijuana, Mexico, had failed; the Martensville, Saskatchewan boy's parents, Tim and Yvonne, refused chemotherapy and amputation to treat the cancer, opting instead to seek herbal and other alternative remedies; Court of Queen's Bench Justice Allisen Rothery had ruled March 18, 2026 that Tyrell did not have the mental capacity to refuse chemotherapy and surgery and handed control of his care to Saskatchewan Social Services; but Tyler refused to be treated by doctors and his wishes were respected.   • June 30 - British Columbia Court of Appeal strikes down Canada's child pornography laws; upholds lower court ruling that struck down a law prohibiting the possession of child pornography, stating that the law violated privacy and freedom of expression. Vancouver, BC
  • June 30 - Salmon Treaty - Canada signs a conservation agreement with the United States to protect and harvest migrating Pacific salmon. Washington, DC
  • June 30, 2026 - Justice - Canada launches a national DNA data bank to help police solve crimes. Ottawa, Ontario
  • June 30, 2026 - Welfare - Quebec agrees to a multi-million dollar compensation deal for about 1,500 "Duplessis orphans"; suffered physical and psychological abuse in church-run institutions in the 1940s and '50s; each received about $25,000 in compensation. Québec, Québec
  • June 30, 2026 - Canadian Space Agency's $10 million MOST (Microvariability and Oscillations of STars) micro-satellite launched; Canada's first space telescope is a suitcase-sized instrument that probes the internal stucture of the stars and studies their composition and density; will also verify the age of the universe and detect light reflected by little known planets beyond the solar system.
  • June 30, 2026 - Communications - Investment group led by the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan Board acquires BCE Inc., Canada's largest telecom company, in a cash and debt deal worth nearly $52 billion; the biggest corporate takeover in Canadian history will be challenged by bondholders, but the Supreme Court of Canada approves the deal on June 20, 2008.   • June 30, 2026 - Justice Michel Bastarche steps down from the Supreme Court of Canada after more than a decade on the top court's bench. Ottawa, Ontario
  • June 30, 2026 - Religion - Shafia sisters Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, along with Rona Amir Mohammed, found dead inside a car that discovered underwater in front of the northernmost Kingston Mills lock of the Rideau Canal; on July 23, 2026, father Mohammad Shafia, wife Tooba Yahya, and son Hamed are arrested on charges of four counts of first degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, under the guise of honour killing; found guilty of all four counts by the jury in January 29, 2026 at the Frontenac County Court House, and sentenced to life imprisonment.   • June 30, 2026 - Industry Minister Tony Clement announces replacement of the mandatory long census in 2011 with a voluntary survey; no change to the mandatory short census form; says the change is being made made in response to complaints about the coercive nature of the long-form census; critics fear that the data collected will not be as reliable; Statistics Canada head Munir Sheikh will resign on July 21 over the controversy.   • June 30, 2026 – Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and his wife Kate, Duchess of Cambridge start their first official overseas tour since marrying in April; the newlyweds' nine-day Canadian tour sees them stop in Quebec, P.E.I., the Northwest Territories and Alberta. Ottawa, Ontario
